Tooth Discoloration: The Two Types of Tooth Stains

There are two categories of staining as it relates to the teeth: extrinsic staining and intrinsic staining.

Extrinsic stains are those that appear on the surface of the teeth as a result of exposure to dark-colored beverages, foods and tobacco, and routine wear and tear. Superficial extrinsic stains are minor and can be removed with brushing and prophylactic dental cleaning. Stubborn extrinsic stains can be removed with more involved efforts, like teeth bleaching. Persistent extrinsic stains can penetrate into the dentin and become ingrained if they are not dealt with early.

Intrinsic stains are those that form on the interior of teeth. In the past, it was thought that intrinsic stains were too resistant to be corrected by bleaching. Today, cosmetic dentistry experts believe that even deep-set intrinsic stains can be removed with supervised take-home teeth whitening that is maintained over a matter of months or even a year.

Over-the-Counter Whitening

6. Use apple cider vinegar as mouthwash as teeth whitener. Just swish it around your mouth for a couple of minutes, or you can mix it with a teaspoon of baking soda and a dash of salt to make a teeth whitening paste you can apply on your teeth. This is an effective teeth whitener that combines three teeth whitening agents (vinegar, baking soda and salt) all together to create one potent mix.

7. If home-made teeth whitening remedies do not seem to work for you lackluster and yellowish teeth, your may want to buy-over-the counter teeth whitening products like take-home teeth whitening sprays, teeth whitening gels, or toothpaste whiteners. As technology advances and regulations are relaxed many of the over counter products contain the same ingredients as the professional whitening systems. The ingredients in professional systems are hydrogen peroxide and carbamide which are now used in home teeth whitening kits.

Studies have shown that using over the counter products regularly and using them properly might outlast the professional whitening systems.

Home Teeth Whitening Kits

Upper And Lower Trays: The upper and lower trays fit over your teeth. These need to be fitted properly or the solution will not bond with your teeth, which will reduce the whitening effect. Most of these tray systems need to be worn for many hours. Some have reported sensitivity to their gums from the use of this product.

Clear Strips: This type of system uses two clear strips one for the upper teeth and one for the bottom teeth. The whitening solution is already applied to the strips so there is no mess. When applying the strips they need to adhere properly to the teeth or the solution will not activate. Some people still report gum sensitivity with this product but is minimal compared to trays.

Whitening Pens: The pen solution is easier and faster to use. The pen is small and compact. The whitening solution is inside the pen and is dispensed when the tip is pressed against the tooth. When applying the solution to each tooth make sure to cover the entire tooth. The pen allows for equal distribution of the solution assuring that each tooth is whitening equally to the others.
